You can also walk at your own speed without fear of stepping on uneven ground or on slipper walkways.
Most walls encourage the activity as a form of advertising. Who can resist an occasional glance at a store display? The malls usually open a couple hours before the businesses do. This gives you a chance to relax in quiet setting. Some facilities play music and others encourage you to bring your own. You can exercise with a friend or enjoy the experience alone.Walking solo means you can go at your own speed. Either way, it’s good physical activity.
Walking requires no equipment other than proper shoes. You should check with your local shoe store and ask for help selecting the proper shoe with the proper fit. Be sure to begin slowly. If you are not a frequent walker, try 10 to 15 minutes at a leisurely pace. You can increase your distance and speed as you become more aware of you physical limitations.
Most of all, have fun. You’ll tend to stick with an exercise you enjoy doing. Remember to stay hydrated. Keep a water supply nearby. You can choose your own speed, but remember to be aware of other walkers. Here are a few tips:
- If you are walking at a very slow pace, be sure to stay to the right so others can get by. Slower walkers can interfere with the pace of speedier walkers. If you walk with other people, be sure your group isn’t holding up other people. When you get to the smaller aisles, stay in single file. You can walk at any speed you choose, but be aware of others.
- Don’t make sudden stops with people behind you. A collision could cause injuries. People seem to stop for two reasons. The first is to answer a cell phone. If your phone rings, at least move out of the aisle to answer it. How many of these calls are so important they cannot be returned later? Some folks carry on an audible conversation while they walk. We are not interested in your family business, so keep it private. The second reason people stop is to window shop. Please, this is not the time to stop suddenly and admire a spring hat. come back when the stores are open.
- If you have to bring your kids with you, keep them supervised. Don’t stop suddenly with your stroller to play with your child. Go to an open area to accommodate others.
- If you are a sidewinder (a person that can’t walk straight), find an open area to walk. This is no different than a driver who veers from one lane to the other.
- If you come upon these shufflers or sidewinders, it doesn’t hurt to yell, “I’m passing on the right or left or center.”
- If you are a faster walker, be sure to be very careful not to run down slower walkers.
- If you choose to walk when the stores are open, be sure to yield to shoppers. The store management will appreciate it.
Many malls have walking programs. You can stop by the customer service area and inquire. If they don’t have a program, you can get with other walkers and start your own. It’s fun to compare progress with others and challenge each other to stay motivated. This is an excellent way to set goals for yourself and others. Encourage other walkers every day. You could be a key to their success. Remember, most experts believe walking is one of the best exercises. Its low impact and doesn’t take any special skills. You can even set the goal of walking in an event to raise money for a charitable cause. Whatever your motivation, stick with it. Enjoy your walk and be sure to have fun.
