Resilient Monroe, with the support of its partner, the Community Foundation of Monroe County, is seeking input from Monroe Area residents through a Monroe Community Planning Survey.

MONROE, Mich. – July 1, 2013 – A special opportunity to help shape the future of the greater Monroe
community is coming to thousands of area mailboxes this week.
As a part of the ongoing community planning effort, over 11,000 randomly selected individuals within
the City of Monroe, Monroe Charter Township, and Frenchtown Charter Township will receive a survey.
Results of the survey will be used to inform the community planning committee about important areawide issues and land-use concerns.
Survey respondents are asked to answer questions on a diverse array of community topics and issues.
Examples of these topics include: key cultural and leisure attractions in the Monroe area; natural,
cultural, and historical assets in the region; transportation issues; questions about jobs and the
economy; housing opportunities; priorities for government funding; and emergency preparedness.
Respondents who return completed surveys can enter into a drawing for a chance to win one of four
$100 gift certificates to a grocery store of their choice. The four lucky winners will be selected at random after the survey results have been tabulated.
Resilient Monroe is a community planning project that focuses on Frenchtown Charter Township, the
City of Monroe, and Monroe Charter Township. The project brings the planning commissions and
elected officials of all three governments together for the first time. The intergovernmental project will
address a wide range of shared concerns such as improvements to transportation corridors, efforts to
build the local economy, and new ways to manage the impacts of climate variability. Project leaders
expect the master-planning process to take about a year. The survey is part of a larger effort to engage
the public in this planning process.
The Resilient Monroe project is being paid for by grants obtained by LIAA (a nonprofit community
service organization) from the Kresge Foundation and the Americana Foundation. The three
participating local governments are also collectively contributing over $20,000 to help pay for
professional planning support, research, technical assistance, and policy development.
Resilient Monroe is being supported by a large number of community organizations as well, including
Monroe County’s Planning Department, the Community Foundation of Monroe County, Monroe County
Intermediate School District, Monroe County Community College, Monroe County Convention and
Tourism Bureau, Monroe County Business Development Corporation, and the Arthur Lesow Community
Center.
Everyone throughout the community is encouraged to learn more about the project and participate in
the public discussions. More information about the project is available through the project website at
