Superintendent Scott J. Bentley announced today that River Raisin National Battlefield Park will be presenting “The Art of Kayaking” on the River Raisin and Huron River for the first time! Visitors will learn how to kayak and have a chance to test different kayak styles as they learn about the importance of water ways in early American History. Visitors participating on the Huron River will also get to participate in the first public tours of the 200 year-old Historic Hulls Trace!
Roger Homrich, Jr. will present the Art of Kayaking the River Raisin on Saturday June 7, 2014, from 9-11 a.m. and beginning at the Hellenberg Park boat launch on E. Front Street in Monroe, MI. The Art of Kayaking the Huron River will be by Mr. Homrich on Saturday, June 21, 2014, from 9-11 a.m. and will begin at the Hulls Road boat launch at the mouth of the Huron River (Jefferson Avenue) in Brownstown Township, MI. Children ages 7 to 10 must be in a double Kayak with an adult (there is a limit of 5 children and 5 adults for double Kayaks). Youth ages 11 to 15 must have an adult on the trip with them, but may be in a single Kayak. Participants age 16 and older have no restrictions. Previous experience kayaking is not required.

“The Art of Kayaking” programs are part of a series of River Raisin Rx Outdoor Explorer programs to be offered in 2014 to help connect people with healthy outdoor activities and experiences in National Parks and on park trails. The 2014 programs are being provided through a partnership with the National Park Foundation through the generous support of Coca-Cola and the Coca-Cola Foundation, Mercy Memorial Hospital System, the Monroe County Health Department, River Raisin National Battlefield Park Foundation, Wayne County Parks, Cabela’s, the City of Monroe Parks and Recreation Department, and the Monroe YMCA.
