Golf enthusiasts, community members and health-conscious people of all ages are invited to participate in the First Annual Go M.A.D. Fitness Golf Outing on Sunday, June 1, at 9 am on Carrington Golf Course to benefit the Monroe County Special Olympics and Monroe County Substance Abuse Coalition.
“I’m in the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Monroe program,” says Jason Reinhardt, owner of Go M.A.D. Fitness. “We meet once per month and focus on a different topic each time. Recently we had a law enforcement day that discussed the drug problem in Monroe County. I also met April Demers, director of the Substance Abuse Coalition. That organization is a non-profit like Special Olympics. After hearing of the local drug epidemic, I wanted to help in some way.”
Your help is needed to spread word of the outing. You can also participate by sponsoring the event in one of two tiers: event sponsorships are $60 each, putting green and driving range sponsorships are $100 each.
If you’re eager to show off your athleticism, the cost to golf is $75 per person or $280 for a team of four. This price includes breakfast snacks, range balls and 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch and prizes.
“Again, using our motto of Go Make a Difference, we’re trying to get people outside where they can enjoy the weather and raise money for two great causes,” Jason says.
The Monroe County Special Olympics counts 713 local athletes who participate in year-round sports events. These people, each of whom has a cognitive disability, are ages 8 years and older and improve self-image through competition.
“My brother-in-law is a Special Olympian, and I’ve been personally involved with Special Olympics for a long time,” Jason says. “We host their power lifting at Go M.A.D. Fitness on Wednesday nights for free. Sundays are their weight lifting nights.”
The Monroe County Substance Abuse Coalition works to promote a healthy, informed, proactive community to decrease substance use and abuse among youth. As Jason says, “People are out there fighting an uphill battle with drugs. Then there are those who want a chance to be accepted on and off the field. We’re here to help.”
