In every profession, writing is an essential element to success. Unfortunately, the competition for our kids’ attention is fierce. With all the cyber gadgets as well as television, we are in a tough battle. We have to fight for their attention. Reading can be exciting if it’s emphasized at an early age.
The example parents set is key to reading skills and development. The problem is that many parents don’t spend the time it requires. Turn off the television and be a role model. If the kids see you reading, they may see its importance. Don’t rely on the teacher to do everything. Try family group reading. Let the kids select the material and make it a ritual. You can read, and they can follow.
I remember one girl whose parents would have her come home every afternoon and read for one hour. This was during summer vacation, and she was in elementary school. Sometimes books are made into movies. This is a chance to compare the film with the actual book. Many books are also available on CDs. The readers follows along to the book being performed by professional orators. These skilled people make the book come to life. From this, students learn to visualize the characters and the enthusiasm with which a book should be read.
Learners should be familiar with the library as well. The librarian is more than willing to give students a tour and explain available offerings. Many libraries have reading areas with comfortable seating. Maybe a reading area in your home would be appropriate. Have books readily available for all to enjoy. This will show the importance you have placed on reading.
In school, kids may act out scenes from the book. Reader’s theatre is a fun way for kids to improve their skills by playing the characters in front of the class. They don’t have to memorize the manuscript; they learn to express the story with their voices. Soon, they will being to read their school material with the same type of expression. You can discuss the different emotions such as fear, happiness, revenge, and anger. If they can get the realism of expression, they will have fun. The group will gain in skill and confidence by going to other classes and performing. Performing will improve reading.
Eight-hundred million people around the world cannot read or write. We don’t want any of our kids to be a casualty. The more you read, the better reader you become. If you attend church, kids can read in Sunday school. There is nothing wrong with reading on E-tablets; whatever it takes to turn off the video games, cell phones and flat screens. It’s that important.
We shouldn’t teach great books:
We should teach love of reading.
