According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s 2012 National Survey, 46 percent of respondents believed that a natural disaster will occur in their community; however, nearly 70 percent of Americans have not participated in a preparedness drill or exercise in the past two years.
As a proud supporter of America’s PrepareAthon!, the Monroe County Health Department (MCHD) wants to share important information that will help you and your family be better prepared in case of a disaster.
America’s PrepareAthon! is a nationwide, community-based campaign for action to increase emergency preparedness and resilience. Every spring and fall, organizations around the country will focus on preparedness during a national day of action.
These national days of action drive participation in hazard-specific drills, group discussions, and exercises. At MCHD, our goal is to help you:
- Understand which disasters could happen in your community;
- Know what to do to be safe and lessen damage;
- Practice drills and share information to better prepare your employees, affiliates, and the communities you serve; and
- Participate in community resilience planning.
To reach these goals, MCHD will be hosting Monroe County’s PrepareAthon! on April 30, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Monroe County Health Department, located at 2353 S. Custer Rd., Monroe, MI 48161. We will be discussing what you need to know about tornadoes, what you can do to help our community and how to prepare. With help from our Monroe County Medical Reserve Corps, this will be an educational and interactive event.
In addition to this event, MCHD Emergency Preparedness Division plans, trains and exercises for emergencies in our county every day. Monroe County’s PrepareAthon! is our chance to share it with our community.
