OK, gang, I feel a rant bubbling up from below. This bad boy has been simmering for some time, so I’m hoping it comes out as more of a WTH as opposed to a WTF. So, here goes…why do we put so much stock and power into the fashion industry whose main focus is to separate the haves from the have-nots? Is this country so superficial that we judge the worth of our people by what they wear and not what is in our hearts, souls and actions? And when did Joan Rivers, a stand-up comedian of the 1970’s, become the arbiter of said fashion? Churlish and abrasive in her act, she has taken it to the “Red Carpet” to critique how movie stars are dressed. By her side is daughter Melissa, who apparently wasn’t able to find gainful employment on her own so Mom gets her a sidekick gig. These two have a show with guest critics like Kelly and Sharon Osborn and their job is to pick apart celebrity wardrobes. So, the wolf shepherds the sheep?
Let’s not forget the sheep. They don’t wear fur, eat meat, hunt, fish, or want you to own a gun. Yet they smoke, do drugs, and believe in abortion as birth control and have the nerve to look down on the common man and woman struggling every day to make ends meet. Designers making one-of-a-kind dresses with 6-digit price tags that even as copies and knock-offs will garner hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars. Blue jeans costing well over $200.00; Levi Strauss is rolling over in his grave! Not sure about you guys, but I sure don’t need or want any fancy embroidery, bedazzling or FLAPS on the back pockets of my JEANS! Then we have the PetaVegan “supermodels” that look like they just came out of a heroin den and “tsk tsk” you for munchin’ on a chicken sandwich from a known conservatively oriented chain restaurant? Common or “uncommon,” this doesn’t make “sense” to me.
I struggle to find a plausible reason for the existence of this industry. It appears to be one big cat fight and when they tire of pulling each other’s hair, they turn their petty anger on Average Joe and his work-a-day life. What bearing on our lives does this industry bear? We wear jeans and t-shirts, even the occasional button-down shirt, and I make it through each day comfortable, happy and content in the fact that we have friends and family that love us. So why must we be subjected to the self-importance of Karl Lagerfeld and Naomi Campbell? What difference does it make if the Rivers and Isaak Mizrahi shred someone for wearing the wrong color or material for the season. Maybe they will eat each other and breed themselves out of the public consciousness. Then again, why don’t I pull up my 505’s, spritz on the English Leather and ignore the whole damn bunch of them!
